Mrs. Sonora Dodd is supposed to be the first person suggested the idea of celebrating Father’s Day in honor of fathers in 1909. The first Father’s day was celebrated in USA on 19th June, 1910.
On this day people used to honor their fathers or the father like people who have a great impact and a huge influence in their lives. Everyone has their own way to celebrate Father’s day. People like to give cards, gifts or flowers to their fathers, some prefer to go out on lunch and some spend the whole day with their fathers. The goal of this day is to honor fathers and make them feel that how special they are in our lives.
Father’s Day is celebrated to show our affection to Fathers and Father like figures ie uncles and grandpa. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the USA and in some other countries.
Various countries rejoice this holiday at some other times of the year. In Australia, for instance, Father’s Day is celebrated on the 1st Sunday of September; in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, on the 2nd Sunday in November; and in some Catholic countries, on March 19 which is St. Joseph’s Day.
Alike Mother’s Day, the modern American variety of Father’s Day has a history that goes well beyond greeting cards.
The first known Father’s Day service occurred at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908, thanks to the efforts of Grace Golden Clayton. Mrs. Clayton had asked her pastor, Dr. R. Thomas Webb, if a Sunday service could be held to honor fathers.
Though missing her own dad, who had died in 1896, Mrs. Clayton especially wanted to have a service in memory of the over 200 fathers who died in the Monongah mining explosion that had happened a few miles south of Fairmont on December 6 of the previous year. It was the most horrible mining tragedy in U.S. history, killing more than 360 men and boys, and parting about 1,000 kids fatherless.
Though the Fairmont service was the first known to honor dads, it did not turn into an annual event, nor was the idea endorsed (a large July 4 celebration in Fairmont and a awful young death from typhoid fever having taken over the news at that time.
